Our Missionaries

Mark Hare: Missionary to Haiti
Mark Hare currently serves as a missionary in Haiti where he works with a grassroots movement called Farmer's Movement of Papaye which assists thousands of community groups throughout the country. Mark assists the people of Haiti in developing diversification and integration of small animal production with vegetables and other crops. One project is "The Road to Life Yard" where the crops are grown in old tires raised about three feet off the ground to be out of the reach of marauding goats and chickens. Before coming to Haiti, Mark served as a PC (USA) long term international volunteer helping the people of Nicaragua with community development, soil management and agroforestry. He also was a member of the Peace Corp serving 2 and ½ years in the Dominican Republic. Mark Hare has North Carolina roots beginning with his undergraduate days at Warren Wilson College in Asheville where he studied international development. He has a master's degree in Forestry from Michigan State University and is still closed connected to his Presbyterian Church in Amesville, Ohio.

Alan and Ellen Smith: Missionaries to Russia
Alan and Ellen Smith were appointed in 2001 to serve in Russia as coordinators of a program started by the PC(USA) to match interested congregations in the United States with congregations in Russia and Belarus for both supporting missions and building deeper spiritual connections. In addition to this service, Al teaches math at a Christian academy in Moscow. Ellen also works with the Russian and Belarusian Round Tables, church structures dedicated to numerous ministries with a special focus on fighting drug abuse and HIV /AIDS. The Smiths became involved in this "twinning" program from their home congregation in Fayetteville, NC beginning in 1999. These congregational partnerships address many problems in Russia from alcoholism, drug addiction, HIV/AIDS, poverty, family disruption, poor health and lack of educational opportunity. The impact on children is particularly overwhelming. Ellen's background is in education-she taught middle school reading and social studies in Cumberland County. Al practiced law in Fayetteville prior to moving to Russia. They both are ordained to the ministries of elder and deacon and are members of McPherson Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, NC. They have three children, one of whom is in college in the United States and two who live with them in Russia. Al's birthday is December 18th and Ellen's is April 16th.
